The New York Mets are sticking with manager Carlos Mendoza despite one of the worst starts in franchise history. President of Baseball Operations David Stearns made that clear Friday morning, backing his skipper amid mounting questions about a potential change.

“Amid one of the worst starts in franchise history, the Mets are backing their manager,” MLB.com’s Anthony DiComo reported. “Carlos Mendoza will remain at the helm for the Mets.”

The real problem isn’t in the dugout—it’s in the batter’s box.

New York’s offense has been historically bad. They’re dead last in baseball in runs scored, on-base percentage, and slugging percentage. The advanced metrics tell the same story: 30th in wOBA, wRC+, and ISO.

“Juan Soto, who missed nearly three weeks with a calf injury, and Francisco Alvarez are the only healthy regulars with an OPS+ above 100 — that’s average,” ESPN noted.

That’s where Christian Walker comes in. The Houston Astros first baseman could be exactly what the Mets need to jumpstart their offense.

Walker Makes Perfect Sense

Walker’s having a blazing start to the season, and he’d fill a glaring hole for New York. The Mets have cycled through multiple options at first base without finding a consistent answer.

What makes this even more appealing is Walker’s defense. He’s won three Gold Gloves in his career, so the Mets would be upgrading on both sides of the ball.

FanSided’s Zachary Rotman proposed a deal that would send David Peterson and pitching prospect Jonathan Pintaro to Houston for Walker. It’s the kind of move that makes sense for both teams—the Astros need starting pitching depth, and the Mets desperately need offensive production.

The season isn’t lost yet for New York. But if they don’t make moves soon, it could slip away quickly. Walker represents the type of established veteran who could provide immediate impact in a lineup that’s struggling to score runs consistently.

All things considered, it’s a move worth pursuing sooner rather than later.
