Why Stephen Vogt isn’t managing the Guardians today vs Twins image

Stephen Vogt won’t be in the dugout when the Cleveland Guardians wrap up their series against the Minnesota Twins on Sunday. The manager is under the weather, according to MLB.com’s Tim Stebbins.

Tony Arnerich will step in as acting manager. The bench coach spent time as both a hitting coach and bullpen coach with the Mariners before joining Vogt’s staff this season.

It’s not ideal timing for Cleveland. Vogt has established himself as one of the better skippers in the game, consistently getting production from a roster that doesn’t have the payroll flexibility of larger-market clubs.

The way I see it, Vogt wouldn’t pull himself out unless he was genuinely feeling rough. That’s just not his style.

Cleveland stays home Monday night for their next series. They’ll be hoping Vogt can shake whatever’s got him sidelined and get back to work.

Arnerich bears more than a passing resemblance to Vogt, which might help with the transition. But there’s no replacing what the actual manager brings to this club on a daily basis.
