Mets Devin Williams May Be Tipping Pitches to Hitters

Devin Williams gave up a walk-off grand slam Sunday to the Miami Marlins, and that crushing blow might not be his biggest problem right now.

Video from the game shows what could be evidence that Williams is still tipping his pitches – giving away what he’s throwing before he releases the ball.

The footage has Liam Hicks on second base bouncing up and down just before Williams delivers the pitch that Heriberto Hernandez launched for the game-winner. It’s not natural movement for a runner in that spot, and it’s got people talking about whether the Mets closer is telegraphing his arsenal.

This isn’t new territory for Williams. He’s faced pitch-tipping speculation before, and now it’s back in a big way after Sunday’s disaster.

You could argue Hicks was just amped up with the winning run ninety feet away. That’s fair – adrenaline does things to players in those moments.

But here’s the thing: why would you bounce around in the batter’s line of sight unless you’re communicating something? It’s either meaningless distraction or it means everything.

We don’t know if Hernandez was even picking up whatever signal Hicks might have been sending. There’s mystery all over this situation.

What we do know is Williams keeps struggling, and if he’s giving hitters a heads-up on what’s coming, that explains a lot. When you’ve got the stuff Williams has, mechanical tells are often the difference between dominance and disaster.

The Mets need to figure this out fast. You can’t close games when the other team knows what you’re throwing.
