The Dodgers are getting healthier at just the right time. With over 30 wins already this season, Los Angeles is starting to look scary again as key players return from injury.

Kiké Hernández is finally ready to rejoin the team after missing the entire start of the season. The utility player underwent left elbow surgery during the offseason but still re-signed with the Dodgers on a one-year, $4.5 million deal despite knowing he’d miss Opening Day.

It’s been a long road back for the fan favorite.

“I knew it was going to be a long rehab. And even though I’m ahead of schedule, it still feels like it’s forever, because it’s the first time in my entire career that I missed spring training and I missed Opening Day,” Hernández said. “Last year was miserable, you know? Not only performance wise, but I was just in a lot of pain every time I took the field. So I’m just happy that I’m pain free right now.”

That last part tells you everything. Hernández played through significant pain last season, which explains some of his struggles. Now that he’s healthy again, the Dodgers are getting back one of their most valuable pieces.

The timing couldn’t be better. Hernández is eligible to come off the 60-day IL on Sunday and has publicly stated his goal is returning Monday when the Dodgers face the Rockies at home.

What Hernández Brings Back

His return opens up so many possibilities for manager Dave Roberts. Hernández can play virtually anywhere – second base, shortstop, third base, and all three outfield positions. That versatility becomes huge during the grind of a long season when guys need rest days.

But it’s more than just the flexibility. Hernández has always elevated his game in October, which is why Dodgers fans have such a connection with him. He’s delivered in big moments throughout his time in Los Angeles.

What makes this different is Hernández’s mindset about his role. He’s fully embraced being the ultimate utility player, and that attitude has allowed him to thrive with the organization. Players who fight their role usually struggle. Players who embrace it, like Hernández, become indispensable.

The rehab assignment has gone well, and by all accounts, he’s ahead of schedule. For a player who’s never missed Opening Day before, that’s got to feel good.

With Hernández back in the fold, the Dodgers’ depth becomes even more impressive. They’re already sitting pretty with 30-plus wins, and now they’re getting healthier at exactly the right time of year.

Monday’s home opener against Colorado should generate plenty of excitement among Dodgers fans who’ve been waiting to see their versatile veteran back in action.
