The Citgo sign beyond the Green Monster at Fenway Park has been part of Boston baseball’s scenery for decades.
It’s going dark for at least six months.
The Red Sox are making structural changes just beyond left field, which means the iconic sign needs to move. Boston media reports the Citgo sign will shift 120 feet east and 30 feet up from where it currently sits.
News: The Citgo Sign is being moved.
It will go dark for at least 6 months as crews prepare to move it 120 feet east and 30 feet upward from its current location.
It is unclear how this will impact its view from Fenway Park.

East at Fenway means toward right field, so the sign’s essentially swinging from its left field perch toward center. With Fenway’s quirky wall structures and varying heights, there’s a real chance this makes the sign less visible from inside the park.
That’s got fans worried. One popular baseball account on X captured the sentiment:
“You can take the World Series winning manager, the World Series legend on his coaching staff, you can take Roman Anthony’s season, Kristian Campbell’s career or Garrett Crochet’s health. Even take away affordable tickets. But do NOT take the big oil and gas company sign.”
The reaction shows how attached fans get to Fenway’s unique features. It’s not just about baseball – it’s about the whole experience staying the same.
What makes this tricky is nobody knows exactly how the move will look from the stands. The sign might end up perfectly visible, or it could disappear behind the Monster or other structures. Boston won’t know until construction wraps up.
For now, fans will have to get used to a Citgo-less skyline for the next six months. Whether they’ll be happy with the new view remains to be seen.
