The Atlanta Braves signed first baseman Rowdy Tellez to a minor league contract, adding depth to their system with Opening Day approaching.

Jon Heyman of the New York Post broke the news late Friday night with a simple report: “Rowdy Tellez to Braves. Minors deal.”

It’s not a splashy move, but it makes sense for a Braves team that’s dealt with some early injury concerns this spring. Tellez gives them experienced depth at first base behind Matt Olson.

The 31-year-old lefty slugger brings power to the organization. He’s hit 122 home runs across eight MLB seasons since breaking in with Toronto in 2018. At 6-foot-4 and 270 pounds, Tellez has that classic first baseman build.

Last season split time between Seattle and Texas, hitting .228 with 17 homers and a .719 OPS in 112 games. Those numbers aren’t eye-popping, but his career .736 OPS and 101 OPS+ show he’s been a slightly above-average hitter over the long haul.

What makes this signing interesting is the timing. Most rosters are basically set at this point, but teams can still add pieces for depth or minor league help. That’s exactly what Atlanta’s doing here.

Tellez won’t threaten Olson for playing time – he’s more insurance in case of injury. His glove isn’t his strongest asset, but he can handle first base duties when needed.

The reality is Tellez might spend the entire season in the minors. But he’s the type of veteran presence organizations value – a guy who’s been around, knows how to prepare, and can contribute if called upon.

It’s one of those low-risk moves that could pay off if the Braves need him. And if they don’t? They’ve added quality depth to their system without any real commitment.

For a team with championship aspirations, having options like Tellez stashed away isn’t glamorous work. But it’s the kind of roster management that can matter when injuries hit or performance dips.
