The Yankees have a looming decision to make at third base, and Nolan Arenado’s name is back in the conversation. With Oswaldo Cabrera and Oswald Peraza sharing duties at the hot corner, New York’s production hasn’t matched their championship aspirations.

Let’s be clear: Cabrera and Peraza are decent players, but comparing them to a future Hall of Famer like Arenado isn’t fair to anyone involved.

As both young infielders cool off, Alexander Wilson of Empire Sports Media suggests the Yankees should revisit their interest in Arenado, pointing to his strong 2025 start as a compelling reason to make a move.

“If the Yankees are still in the thick of a division race by late July—and all signs point to that being the case—don’t be surprised if Cashman starts sniffing around for a proven veteran to stabilize third base,” Wilson wrote.

“One name that could emerge once more? Nolan Arenado. The 34-year-old St. Louis Cardinals star is off to a strong start in 2025, slashing .288/.395/.452 with two home runs and 10 RBIs. His glove remains gold standard, and he would immediately become the best defensive infielder on the team.”

The numbers tell the story. Peraza is hitting just .217 with a single homer – well below what the Yankees envisioned when giving him this opportunity. Cabrera has been somewhat better with a .286 average, but he’s also managed just one home run while striking out 14 times in 49 at-bats.

That’s where Arenado comes in. While he might not be the same dominant force that racked up Gold Gloves and Silver Sluggers in his prime, he’d still represent a significant upgrade over the Yankees’ current options. His defensive prowess alone would transform the left side of New York’s infield.

The Cardinals’ willingness to deal their star third baseman remains the biggest question, but if the Yankees find themselves still battling for AL East supremacy in July, Brian Cashman might finally pull the trigger on a move he’s considered for years.
