Yankees predicted to lose Eugenio Suárez sweepstakes to Brewers

The **Arizona Diamondbacks** are shopping **Eugenio Suárez**, and while the **New York Yankees** desperately need a third baseman, they might not be the team that lands him.

According to USA Today’s Bob Nightengale, Arizona’s making Suárez available as the deadline approaches. The Yankees would love his bat in their lineup, but CBS Sports’ Mike Axisa thinks the **Milwaukee Brewers** are going to swoop in.

“Rookie **Caleb Durbin** has come on strong the last few weeks, so the Brewers don’t absolutely need a third baseman, but why not upgrade when a division title is within reach and you haven’t won a postseason series since 2018?” Axisa wrote. “Trading for a third baseman when you don’t need a third baseman qualifies as bold, I suppose.”

“I’ll say Suárez goes to the Brewers and the main piece in the return is righty Tobias Myers, who has been squeezed out of Milwaukee’s deep rotation. An overpay? Yeah, probably, but whoever gets Suárez will have to win a bidding war.”

Here’s the irony – the Brewers are even considering this move partly because of the Yankees. Durbin was one of the pieces they got in the **Devin Williams** trade, and he’s been red-hot lately.

He’s slashing **.326/.422/.413** over his last 30 games.

The way I see it, Milwaukee’s thinking about moving some pieces around. They could slide Durbin to second base and put **Brice Turang** at shortstop, where he played coming up through their system. That would create the third base opening for Suárez.

From a financial standpoint, it makes sense for the Brewers. Suárez is a rental, so they’re not taking on long-term money while they’re pushing for a division title.

If the Yankees get shut out of the Suárez sweepstakes, they’ll have to pivot. **Ryan McMahon** and **Ke’Bryan Hayes** are both names worth monitoring as potential Plan B options.

All things considered, this feels like one of those situations where a team that doesn’t desperately need the upgrade might be in the best position to make it happen. The Yankees need Suárez more, but the Brewers might have the flexibility to win the bidding war.
