The Yankees are scrambling to finalize their opening day roster with just days to go. They’ve already added Ryan Yarbrough, but don’t be surprised if another move is coming.
Last year, the Yankees snagged Jon Berti right before opening day, and manager Aaron Boone isn’t ruling out similar last-minute additions this week.
“I don’t want to commit to anything with too many things that go on in the industry in the last 48-24 hours,” Boone told NJ.com’s Max Goodman.
The Yankees are likely hunting for a right-handed bat who can play infield while DJ LeMahieu recovers. They’ll need the help — this isn’t the roster Brian Cashman envisioned heading into 2025. Injuries have hit hard, with both Giancarlo Stanton and LeMahieu sidelined to start the season.
Austin Wells could be a key piece in the interim. The young catcher had a strong spring and might help carry the offense until Stanton returns.
The pitching situation has taken an even stranger turn. Just a few months ago, the Yankees were actively shopping Marcus Stroman. Now? He’s suddenly become essential to their rotation plans. With Luis Gil, Gerrit Cole and Clarke Schmidt all dealing with injuries, Stroman finds himself back in a prominent role.
The Yankees open their season Thursday against the Brewers in the Bronx. They’re still aiming for an American League pennant, but they’ll be fighting uphill for the first few weeks as they navigate these early injuries.
