“He was taking good swings all night. You can tell he’s a good, strong kid. He has a good bat path. He’s gonna be a good player, so, you know, hopefully I don’t have to face him too much.”
That’s high praise coming from a proven big league ace, especially for a player outside his own organization. Wheeler’s comments, reported by SI, show the type of respect established veterans have for emerging talent.
It speaks well of Wheeler too. Taking time to acknowledge young players across organizational lines shows the character that makes him respected throughout baseball.

Don’t expect to see Lombard in pinstripes anytime soon though. The Yankees have shown they’re willing to be patient with their prospects, prioritizing long-term development over quick fixes.
That approach has served them well recently. They’re not rushing guys to the majors before they’re ready, which means Lombard likely won’t see Yankee Stadium for another year or so.
For Wheeler, that timeline might actually work in his favor – assuming his comments about hoping not to face Lombard too often were genuine and not just veteran humor.
