The Yankees still need a reliable backup for Austin Wells behind the plate, and James McCann could be the answer they’re looking for.
While New York’s front office is focused on adding left-handed relief help and infield depth, they can’t overlook their catching situation. Alex Jackson, currently slated as Wells’ backup, brings elite pitch-framing skills but hasn’t shown he can handle major league pitching.
That’s where McCann comes in. The former All-Star hit .231 with eight homers and 31 RBI for Baltimore last season, serving as Adley Rutschman’s backup. More importantly, he emerged as a mentor figure for the young catcher – exactly the kind of veteran presence that could benefit Wells.
McCann’s not the same player who made the All-Star team in 2019, but that’s not what the Yankees need. They’re looking for a steady right-handed bat who can give Wells regular rest and provide leadership in the clubhouse.
The timing makes sense too. With the Yankees trying to stay under the $301 million luxury tax threshold, McCann would be an affordable addition. He made $3 million last year with the Orioles, and his market value hasn’t likely changed much.
Let’s put it this way – Jackson’s defensive skills are valuable, but the Yankees could use more offensive punch from thier backup catcher spot. McCann provides that, along with nine years of big league experience.
Spring training’s just a few weeks away, and this is exactly the kind of under-the-radar move that could strengthen the Yankees’ roster depth. It’s worth keeping an eye on as the remaining free agents come off the board.
