Dom Hamel has never given up a run in the major leagues.
Yes, he’s only thrown one MLB inning, but he was quite the escape artist in 2024 for the New York Mets in that lone inning.
Hamel gave up three hits and hit a batter, yet he managed to prevent any of those guys from scoring.
Now, he’s the newest member of the New York Yankees.
The Yanks announced Tuesday afternoon that they’ve claimed Hamel off waivers from the Texas Rangers.
Texas had picked Hamel up earlier in the offseason in a similar move from the Mets. So this guy’s been making the rounds.
Hamel has a career 4.72 ERA in the minor leagues. That was 5.32 in 31 outings for Triple-A Syracuse in 2024, so he’s not exactly a future star, but he can provide organizational depth.
The 26-year old right-hander is originally from Chandler, Arizona and he was a third-round pick in the 2021 MLB Draft out of Dallas Baptist by the Mets.
He’s 6-foot-2 and 237 pounds, a strong fella out on the mound who could make it to the Bronx at some point this season. With his build, he’s got the look of a reliever who can handle late-innings situations if he finds his command.
In continued roster movements, the Yankees designated lefty Jayvien Sandridge and infielder Marco Luciano for assignment. The DFA removes both players from the 40-man roster.
They’ll go on waivers, but if they go unclaimed, they can stay in the Yankees’ system. The Yankees had just gotten Luciano and likely anticipated this move in the hopes of keeping him in Triple-A but not taking up a spot on the 40-man roster.
The waiver news later this week will reveal whether they played their cards right.
