Why Dodgers fans booed struggling Kyle Tucker after latest mishap

Why Dodgers fans booed struggling Kyle Tucker after latest mishap image

The Dodgers spent most of this season carrying Kyle Tucker through an uncharacteristic year, banking on their NL West lead and World Series talent to mask his struggles. That patience is wearing thin.

Tucker got booed at Dodger Stadium on Sunday after missing a catchable fly ball on the warning track against the Brewers. It came one day after manager Dave Roberts benched him due to “frustration” with his home performance.

The defensive miscue alone wouldn’t draw that reaction. But Tucker entered Sunday 0-for-19 on the homestand and was 0-for-3 when he couldn’t make the catch. That’s what happens when a $240 million investment isn’t paying off and the team starts struggling.

Tucker’s home-road split tells the whole story. He’s been a completely different player at Dodger Stadium compared to away games, and it’s gotten bad enough that Roberts is sitting him out of frustration.

The Numbers Don’t Lie

Here’s where Tucker stands entering Sunday’s game:

Overall

Games AVG HR RBI H OPS OPS+
116 .234 11 54 96 .705 96

At home

Games AVG HR RBI H OPS OPS+
59 .192 2 17 39 .566 56

An OPS+ of 56 at home means Tucker’s been 44% worse than league average at Dodger Stadium. That’s backup-level production from a guy who signed a four-year, $240 million deal in January.

The timing couldn’t be worse. Tucker’s struggles flew under the radar when the Dodgers were cruising, but they’ve gone 5-10 in August and just dropped three of four to Milwaukee. That dropped them three games back of the NL’s top seed.

What makes this frustrating is Tucker’s road performance suggests he’s still got it. The split between home and away is so stark that Roberts openly talked about benching him due to “frustration” – that’s not something you hear about star players very often.

The Dodgers proved last year they can win without home-field advantage throughout the playoffs. They’ve got the talent to do it again. But October gets harder when one of your biggest investments is struggling this badly, especially at home where you need every advantage you can get.

Tucker’s got six weeks to figure it out before the games that really matter start. The boos suggest Dodgers fans are running out of patience, and the team’s recent slide means they might not have the luxury of waiting much longer.
