White Sox Alumni Home Run Derby Missing Key Player

The Chicago White Sox announced they’re hosting an alumni home run derby on Saturday, July 11, featuring several former fan favorites.

The lineup includes Alexei Ramirez, Scott Podsednik, Jose Canseco, Gordon Beckham, Leury Garcia, and Daniel Palka. Fans can catch the action after the Sox wrap up their game against the Athletics at Rate Field.

What’s notable is who’s not participating.

Frank Thomas, the franchise’s all-time home run leader with 448 dingers, won’t be taking swings. Neither will Paul Konerko, the 2005 World Series champion who remains one of the most beloved first basemen in team history.

Now, it’s understandable why they’re sitting this one out. Thomas is 58 and Konerko’s 50 – they’re well past their playing days and probably don’t have the same pop they once did.

But here’s the thing: Canseco’s 61 and he’s still willing to give it a go. The former MVP only played 76 games in a White Sox uniform back in 2001, but he made them count with 16 home runs, including the final one of his 17-year career.

It’s definitely a letdown for fans that Thomas won’t be taking hacks. The Big Hurt had some incredible seasons on the South Side, and seeing him launch a few more would’ve been special.

But it should still be a fun event regardless. Sometimes it’s just about watching former players have some fun and connect with the fans again.
