Vladimir Guerrero Jr. has revealed his contract demands after extension talks with the Blue Jays stalled earlier this year. The star first baseman is seeking just under $600 million over 14 or 15 years.

“It’s much less than Soto. We’re talking about many fewer millions than Soto, more than a hundred million less,” Guerrero told ESPN’s Enrique Rojas and Ernesto Jerez. “The last number we gave them as a counteroffer didn’t reach 600.”

Guerrero’s ask puts him in rarified air but still well below Juan Soto’s recent $700 million megadeal with the Yankees. The 25-year-old first baseman seems comfortable with a long-term commitment to Toronto, where he’s spent his entire career since signing as a 16-year-old international free agent in 2015.

“I know the business. I lowered the salary demands a bit, but I also lowered the number of years,” he explained. “I’m looking for 14 years. I would like 14, 15, even 20 if they give them to me, but doing it the right way.”

With the Blue Jays unwilling to meet his asking price before his self-imposed deadline, Guerrero has shut down negotiations for the remainder of the season. He’ll make $28.5 million in 2025 before hitting the open market next winter.

The timing couldn’t be better for Vladdy, who’s putting together another stellar season. He’s hitting .323 with 30 homers and 103 RBIs, showcasing the elite production that’s made him one of baseball’s premier offensive talents.

What makes Guerrero’s case interesting is his impressive resume at such a young age. He’s already a four-time All-Star with two Silver Slugger Awards and a Gold Glove to his name. That combination of youth, accomplishments and offensive upside will make him one of the most coveted free agents in recent memory if he reaches the open market.

The Blue Jays now face a critical decision: meet Guerrero’s demands before he hits free agency or risk losing their franchise cornerstone to the highest bidder. With his price already established, the clock is ticking in Toronto.
