The Tigers have built something special in their farm system. Kevin McGonigle sits atop their prospect rankings, followed by Max Clark and Jesus Briceno. But there’s another name worth knowing.

Cris Rodriguez signed with Detroit last year at just 17 years old for $3.2 million. The outfielder’s been climbing prospect rankings fast, and Bleacher Report’s Joel Retuer thinks he could break out in a big way this season.

“One of the top prospects in the 2025 international class, Rodriguez did not disappoint in his pro debut after securing a $3.2 million bonus from the Tigers. He hit .308/.340/.564 with 12 doubles, 10 home runs, and 39 RBI in 50 games in the DSL, and his powerful swing has drawn comparisons to Aaron Judge and Eloy Jimenez.”

Those are some serious comparisons. Rodriguez’s swing generates the kind of power that gets scouts excited.

What’s impressive is his pitch recognition – especially for someone his age. The challenge now is adjusting to pro-level breaking balls. That’s where most young hitters struggle initially.

Detroit’s farm system was ranked sixth overall at last season’s midway point. With the Tigers competing in a manageable AL Central division, prospects like Rodriguez could fast-track their way to meaningful contributions.

If Rodriguez continues developing at this pace, don’t be surprised if he shoots up prospect rankings this year. The early returns suggest Detroit found something special in the international market.
