The Tigers aren’t backing away from Alex Bregman. Even after signing Jack Flaherty to a two-year, $35 million deal, Detroit’s still pursuing the star third baseman, according to Evan Petzold of Detroit Free Press.
Detroit’s front office, led by Scott Harris, has actually structured their entire offseason around potentially landing Bregman. They’ve deliberately avoided other right-handed hitting options, keeping their powder dry for a big move.
The Tigers have been busy elsewhere, though. They’ve bolstered their pitching staff with Flaherty, Alex Cobb, and Tommy Kahnle, while also adding Gleyber Torres on a one-year deal to shore up the infield. But third base remains a glaring need.
Bregman would be more than just another bat in the lineup. He’s a two-time All-Star who brings serious October experience, having won two World Series rings with Houston. That’s exactly the kind of veteran presence a young Tigers team could use.
What’s interesting is the money situation. MLB Trade Rumors initially projected Bregman would land a seven-year, $182 million contract. But with spring training approaching and no deal in place, that number’s probably coming down.
The Tigers seem to think they’ve got a real shot here. They’ve kept thier focus on Bregman throughout the winter, and the Flaherty signing hasn’t changed that. If anything, adding another quality arm might make Detroit an even more attractive destination for a player looking to win.
