The Colorado Rockies claimed left-handed reliever Sammy Peralta off waivers from the Milwaukee Brewers on Saturday, adding some much-needed depth to their bullpen.

Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel broke the news of the move, which gives Colorado another lefty arm in their relief corps.

The 27-year-old Peralta has bounced around a bit lately. Milwaukee had just claimed him off waivers from the Los Angeles Angels back in October, and now he’s moving again. Colorado optioned him to Triple-A following the claim.

It’s not like Peralta’s numbers jump off the page – he’s carrying a 5.12 ERA over 30 major league appearances since breaking in with the Chicago White Sox in 2023. But sometimes it’s about what a player brings beyond the surface stats.

What makes this pickup interesting is that Colorado really needed another lefty. Right now, Brennan Bernardino is basically their only left-handed reliever at the big league level.

That’s where Peralta comes in. He’s comfortable working multiple innings out of the pen, which gives manager Bud Black more flexibility with his bullpen construction.

“Peralta routinely pitches multiple innings in relief, making him a useful depth option for the Rockies’ bullpen,”

Mark Polishuk of MLB Trade Rumors noted this afternoon.

Look, this isn’t the kind of move that’s going to generate headlines or get fans excited. But these depth additions matter over 162 games.

Colorado’s bullpen has been a work in progress for years, and having that second lefty option – even one who’s still figuring things out at the major league level – could prove valuable down the line. Sometimes it’s about having the right piece available when you need it most.
