The Boston Red Sox just swept their AL East rivals in a four-game series at Fenway, and it’s got folks wondering if this team might actually have something brewing. But don’t get too excited yet.
Sure, beating the Yankees four straight feels great, especially when you’re sitting 4.5 games out of a Wild Card spot and 12 games back in the division. That’s the kind of series that can change a clubhouse’s entire mood.
But here’s the thing – MLB insider Robert Murray from Fansided thinks the Red Sox shouldn’t let one hot weekend fool them into making a mistake at the August 3 trade deadline.
“After sweeping the New York Yankees at Fenway Park over the weekend, a question has been posed to me a few times: Should the Boston Red Sox maybe buy, not sell, ahead of the Aug. 3 trade deadline? The answer is no. At least, for now.”
Murray’s got a point. One series doesn’t erase a season’s worth of problems.
The offense is still struggling. Roman Anthony and Garrett Crochet remain sidelined with injuries. And here’s what really matters – other teams are calling about Boston’s trade assets.
That’s where the smart money plays come in. Players like Sonny Gray, Aroldis Chapman, and even Jarren Duran could bring back solid returns in what’s shaping up to be a seller’s market.
Let’s put it this way: the starting rotation has been good, even without Crochet. But this roster isn’t built for a World Series run, not even with some deadline additions.
The American League’s weakness might make things look better than they actually are for Boston right now.
From Murray’s perspective, that’s the reality check this organization needs. It’s not wrong, though it stings to think about selling after such a statement series against New York.
There’s still over a month before the deadline hits. Maybe the Red Sox keep this momentum going and climb back into the race. Maybe they don’t.
But one four-game sweep – even against the Yankees – shouldn’t determine their entire deadline strategy. Too much is riding on what happens this summer to base everything on one hot weekend in July.
