The Red Sox might have found something special in Conrad Cason, their intriguing two-way prospect from the 2023 MLB draft.

Cason, an 18-year-old eighth-round pick out of Greater Atlanta Christian School, turned down a commitment to Mississippi State to sign with Boston. What makes him particularly interesting is that he’s getting a chance few other teams were willing to offer – the opportunity to develop as both a pitcher and position player.

“Boston was kinda the only one that was gonna let me do both at the same time,” Cason revealed on the Baseball Isn’t Boring podcast. “This sounds really awesome, and this is a place that I really want to be and a culture that I really want to be a part of.”

The way Cason tells it, his path to the Red Sox was pretty clear even before draft day. “My agent called me… by that time, the teams that were early for Day 2, late-Day 2, those teams were kinda out,” he explained. “Boston was the only one that kinda said this is our game plan for you, if you accept and want to take this and like this. I was 1000% on board with it.”

It’s easy to see why teams were interested in Cason’s arm – he dominated in his senior year with a 0.48 ERA and 99 strikeouts in just 43 2/3 innings. But his bat was equally impressive: a .364 average with a 1.064 OPS, three homers, 28 RBIs and 16 stolen bases in 99 at-bats.

While we’re still years away from seeing Cason at Fenway Park, his unique skillset and the Red Sox’s willingness to let him develop as a true two-way player makes him one of the most fascinating prospects to watch in the organization’s system.
