The Red Sox are running out of options to add a right-handed power bat, and another potential target is off the board. Randal Grichuk is heading back to Arizona on a one-year, $5 million deal that includes $500,000 in potential incentives.

It’s a sensible reunion after Grichuk’s strong 2023 campaign with the Diamondbacks. The 33-year-old outfielder posted some of his best numbers last season, hitting .291 with an .875 OPS while smacking 12 homers and driving in 46 runs in 106 games.

The way Grichuk performed in Arizona makes the $5 million price tag look like solid value. He’s bounced around quite a bit since being drafted 24th overall by the Angels in 2009 – going from St. Louis to Toronto to Colorado, then brief stops with the Angels and D-backs last year.

Boston’s front office has been surprisingly quiet this offseason when it comes to adding offense. With Spring Training just days away, chief baseball officer Craig Breslow still hasn’t addressed the team’s clear need for a right-handed impact bat.

The market’s getting thin, but there are still a couple of intriguing possibilities. Alex Bregman could be available via trade entering his walk year with Houston. There’s also Nolan Arenado, who’s name keeps surfacing in trade rumors despite his full no-trade clause with St. Louis.

The Sox need to act soon if they want to upgrade their lineup before camp opens. Thier window for making a significant move is closing fast, and the remaining options are limited.
