Red Sox Target Blue Jays Right-Hander Despite Sonny Gray Trade

The Boston Red Sox keep getting linked to starting pitchers, even after landing Sonny Gray. With several big names still on the board, they’ve got options.

For the Toronto Blue Jays, that might mean losing a fan favorite.

Chris Bassitt looks like he’s headed out of Toronto, especially if teams offer him a bigger role or better money. The Red Sox are among the clubs showing interest.

FOX Sports’ Rowan Kavner connected the two sides, noting that while Bassitt might be in the second tier of available starters, he can still help teams like Boston fill out their rotation.

“With Dylan Cease, Michael King and now Imai off the board, there seems to be a relatively clear top three before a drop-off to the next tier, which includes Bassitt,” Kavner wrote. “The veteran right-hander will turn 37 before the start of the 2026 season, but he’s coming off an interesting year in which he registered a 3.96 ERA before emerging as a relief weapon in October for a Blue Jays team that nearly won the World Series.”

From Toronto’s perspective, losing Bassitt doesn’t kill them. But it wouldn’t be ideal seeing him suit up in Boston.

Here’s what makes Bassitt valuable: he’s proven he can make 30 starts in a season and give you something every fifth day. That’s not flashy, but it’s exactly what teams need.

For the Red Sox, the appeal is clear. Bassitt offers experience, innings, and likely a shorter-term deal compared to the aces still available. He’s not going to be your ace, but he can be a solid middle-of-the-rotation guy who eats innings.

The way I see it, Boston’s already made one smart veteran addition in Gray. Adding Bassitt would give them two experienced arms to anchor what’s been an inconsistent rotation. Sometimes the best moves aren’t the splashiest ones.
