The Red Sox sit at 27-35, which isn’t pretty, but they’re somehow still breathing in the playoff race. That American League parity is keeping hope alive in Boston.
But let’s be realistic here. If things keep trending south between now and the August 3 trade deadline, Craig Breslow and the front office might have to face some tough decisions about selling off pieces. The bullpen could be ground zero for any fire sale.
Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports that Boston has already been taking calls on three relievers. The big name? Aroldis Chapman.
“The Red Sox are shopping Wong in particular, according to a league source, and have also fielded calls on relievers Aroldis Chapman, Justin Slaten and Garrett Whitlock.”
Now that’s interesting. The Red Sox keeping their phone lines open for these guys tells you they’re at least doing their homework. McCaffrey doesn’t think Boston’s actively shopping them right now, but this willingness to listen? That opens doors down the road.
The way I see it, the Red Sox would only move Chapman, Justin Slaten, or Garrett Whitlock if this season completely falls apart over the next month. If they’re mathematically eliminated or close to it by deadline day, selling becomes the smart play.
Chapman Would Command the Biggest Haul
If Boston does decide to sell, Chapman’s the crown jewel here. The guy’s been lights out with a 0.46 ERA, 13 saves, and 26 strikeouts across 19.2 innings. On top of that, he’s likely under club control through 2027.
That combination of performance and contract status? Teams would be lining up.
Whitlock’s posted a 3.20 ERA this season and would bring back solid value. Slaten sits at a 3.27 ERA and represents another quality trade chip if it comes to that.
All things considered, the Red Sox aren’t planning to wave the white flag just yet. But they’re being smart about it – listening to offers, gauging the market, and keeping their options open. Sometimes that’s how these deadline deals start taking shape, one phone call at a time.
