MassLive’s Chris Cotillo reports the Boston Red Sox signed left-handed pitcher Sean Newcomb to a minor-league contract with an invitation to Spring Training.
The Red Sox are building pitching depth after injuries contributed to their .500 record (81-81) last season.
Newcomb, 31, returns to his home state after eight MLB seasons. The Brockton native and Middleborough High School graduate was selected in the first round of the 2014 MLB draft by the Los Angeles Angels out of the University of Hartford.
The left-hander made his MLB debut with the Atlanta Braves in 2017 as a starter after being acquired in the Andrelton Simmons trade. He transitioned to the bullpen in 2019.
Newcomb’s career statistics include a 4.51 ERA and 9.1 strikeouts per nine innings across 431 innings. He’s appeared in 175 games, including 60 starts.
Since 2022, Newcomb has pitched for the Chicago Cubs, San Francisco Giants, and Oakland Athletics.
