Red Sox President Hints at Additional Roster Moves Before 2025 Season image

The Red Sox trucks are rolling south to Fort Myers, signaling baseball’s return, but Boston’s roster still needs work before Spring Training starts at JetBlue Park.

There’s no hiding the team’s obvious needs: they could use another right-handed bat, a sure-handed veteran infielder, and a reliable late-inning reliever – preferably someone who can close games. It’s a lot to address with camp starting in just days.

Red Sox president and CEO Sam Kennedy says they’re not done yet. “We have the ability to add, if we can match up on deals that make sense,” Kennedy told MassLive on Monday. He pointed to their pursuit of Juan Soto as evidence they’re willing to spend on the right opportunities.

“We’re going to do what’s right for the Red Sox for the short-term, trying to put a team out there that’s built to win in 2025, but also what makes sense for the long term,” Kennedy said. “It’s always a difficult line to walk, that balance. We get criticized for our messaging on that front and we understand that.”

Kennedy knows talk is cheap at this point. “The only way to really follow up on that and have credibility and trust from our fans is to win baseball games. That’s what we need to do.”

The stakes are getting higher for Boston’s front office. Fan interest is waning after three straight years missing the playoffs, and another season of unfulfilled promises won’t help. The projections for 2025 aren’t kind either – most systems have the Red Sox struggling to compete in a loaded AL East.

That’s where these next few moves become crucial. The team has money to spend and clear needs to address. Now it’s about turning those resources into results before the fanbase’s patience runs out completely.
