The Red Sox rotation is getting crowded after their offseason moves, and Jack Flaherty thinks that might’ve cost him a spot in Boston.

Boston’s been busy reshaping their starting staff, bringing in Garrett Crochet, Walker Buehler, and Patrick Sandoval. That’s three potential rotation pieces when everyone’s healthy.

“The White Sox trading away Crochet, who’s one of the only pieces that they have to the Red Sox,” Flaherty said on Foul Territory. “Kudos to the Red Sox for going and getting him. That takes a spot away from where I could’ve potentially gone.”

Flaherty’s coming off a solid 2023 campaign split between Detroit and Los Angeles. The 29-year-old right-hander put up impressive numbers:

  • 3.17 ERA
  • 1.068 WHIP
  • 10.8 K/9
  • 162 innings across 28 starts

It’s been quite a journey for the former Cardinals first-rounder. After his 2017 debut with St. Louis, he bounced around a bit last year, going from Baltimore to Detroit and finally landing with the Dodgers for their playoff run.

The market seems to like what they’ve seen. Spotrac projects Flaherty’s looking at a three-year, $63.17 million deal this offseason.

The Red Sox rotation’s getting pretty full. They’ve got Buehler (Flaherty’s former Dodgers teammate), Crochet, and Sandoval in the mix. Plus, Lucas Giolito – who actually played high school ball with Flaherty – is working his way back from injury. That doesnt leave much room for another starter.
