The Red Sox are setting up a more nuanced infield plan than most fans realize, and it involves Marcelo Mayer sharing time rather than claiming a full-time spot.

Boston’s former top prospect is expected to play either second or third base this season, especially with Alex Bregman signing elsewhere. But the assumption that Mayer would automatically become an everyday starter might be off the mark.

Chris Cotillo of MassLive clarified the team’s likely approach on Wednesday:

“One small thing that is off in the public roster discourse is ‘They add someone at 2B or 3B and Mayer plays the other spot.’ The real truth there will be: ‘They add someone at 2B or 3B and Mayer and Romy platoon at the other spot.'”

That’s where Enmanuel De La Cruz comes into play. The utility player, who goes by Romy, hit right-handed while Mayer bats from the left side.

It’s a setup that makes sense from a strategic standpoint.

If Boston doesn’t add another infielder, both players could see regular time. But the Red Sox have been linked to second basemen like Nico Hoerner and Brendan Donovan in trade talks. Landing either would likely create the platoon situation Cotillo described.

The numbers support that approach. Romy Gonzalez absolutely demolished left-handed pitching last season, posting a .978 OPS against southpaws in 2025.

Those splits are too good to ignore. Boston will find ways to get Gonzalez in the lineup when lefties are on the mound, and pairing him with Mayer in a platoon arrangement gives the team flexibility while both players adjust to their roles.

What makes this approach interesting is how it manages expectations for Mayer while maximizing the roster’s potential. The 22-year-old shortstop-turned-infielder gets regular major league experience without the pressure of an everyday role right away.

From where I’m sitting, it’s a measured way to handle a prospect who’s still finding his footing at the big league level. The Red Sox get the benefit of Gonzalez’s proven ability against lefties while giving Mayer time to develop into what they hope becomes an everyday contributor.
