The Boston Red Sox might be struggling early this season, but there’s one bright spot emerging from their loaded outfield group. Wilyer Abreu looks like he’s putting together the best year of his MLB career.
It’s worth noting just how deep this Red Sox outfield really is. Roman Anthony, Ceddane Rafaela, Wilyer Abreu, and Jarren Duran form one of the most talented units in baseball. That’s even before you factor in Masataka Yoshida.
While Anthony has struggled out of the gate, Abreu seems to be taking his game to another level. The two-time Gold Glove winner has always been elite defensively, but now he’s putting it together at the plate too.
“Red Sox: Wilyer Abreu is primed for his best all-around season,” Ian Browne of MLB.com writes. “Abreu was a standout defender in his first two seasons, with a pair of Gold Glove Awards to show for it. He now looks like he is ready to be a more consistent run producer at the plate.”
The numbers back that up. Abreu’s hitting .311 with an .886 OPS and three homers so far this season. For a guy who’s already proven he can anchor an outfield defensively, this offensive development changes everything.
What makes this interesting is how it affects Boston’s trade plans. There have been rumors for over a year now about the Red Sox moving one of their outfielders. Duran has been mentioned most often, but Abreu’s name has popped up in trade talks as well.
But here’s the thing – if Abreu’s really breaking out into a complete player, why would Boston even consider trading him? You’ve got elite defense and now consistent offensive production. That’s exactly what teams are looking for in an outfielder.
The way I see it, Abreu’s emergence could shift the entire dynamic. Instead of trying to figure out which outfielder to move, the Red Sox might have their answer about which one to keep.
Even if 2026 doesn’t go according to plan for Boston as a team, watching Abreu develop into the superstar he has the potential to become would be a major positive. Sometimes individual breakouts matter just as much as team success when you’re building for the future.
All things considered, this feels like one of those situations where a player’s timing couldn’t be better. Abreu’s showing he belongs in the conversation with Boston’s other talented outfielders, and he might just be getting started.
