Red Sox get 6 free agent options after losing Pete Alonso & Kyle Schwarber image

The Red Sox are still searching for offensive help after missing out on their top free agent targets.

Pete Alonso ended up signing with division rival Baltimore, while Kyle Schwarber decided to return to Philadelphia. That’s left Boston scrambling to find another impact bat.

MLB.com’s Manny Randhawa identified six potential options for the Red Sox to consider:

  • Alex Bregman
  • Bo Bichette
  • Eugenio Suarez
  • Ketel Marte
  • Kazuma Okamoto
  • Jorge Polanco

Now, Ketel Marte would require a trade since he’s still under contract with Arizona. But the other five are all available as free agents.

Alex Bregman makes sense as a reunion candidate after his solid first season in Boston last year. The chemistry’s already there.

Going after Bo Bichette would mean poaching talent directly from Toronto, which always adds some division intrigue.

Eugenio Suarez and Jorge Polanco are both coming off the Mariners’ roster. They’re veteran players who can still produce, even if their best years might be behind them.

Then there’s Kazuma Okamoto, the wild card. He’s coming over from Japan with the usual questions about how his game will translate, but scouts seem confident about his hitting ability.

The way I see it, Boston needs to land at least one of these guys – maybe two if they really want to make a statement. Missing out on Alonso stings, but there’s still talent out their if they’re willing to make the moves.
