The Boston Red Sox are closing in on their first postseason berth in years, and there’s one AL East rival that’s dreading a potential matchup.
The New York Yankees don’t want any part of Boston in October, according to FanSided’s Curt Bishop. Can’t blame them – the Sox have owned the Yankees this season.
Boston sits at 8-2 against New York this year. That’s not just winning – that’s domination.
Yankees’ Pitching Problems
Bishop points to New York’s rotation as the main issue. Without Gerrit Cole healthy and Max Fried struggling lately, the Yankees don’t really have an ace they can count on.
“The Yankees might not have the pitching to survive that series, as Max Fried has struggled lately and isn’t pitching like the ace he usually is. Without Gerrit Cole and with Fried struggling, the Yankees don’t really have a starter that can be considered an ace.”
It’s not just the pitching either. Bishop notes the Yankees make too many fundamental mistakes – something that gets exposed in October.
“The Yankees don’t look like a World Series contender as currently constructed,” Bishop wrote. “Anything can happen in the postseason, but the Yankees also make a lot of mistakes fundamentally, so that will be hard for them to overcome.”
Home Field Advantage
Here’s where it gets interesting for Boston. If these teams meet in the Wild Card Series, the Red Sox would have home field advantage for all three games at Fenway Park.
Given how well Boston’s played against New York this season, that setup looks like a potential sweep waiting to happen.
The way things are shaping up, the Red Sox could essentially get a bye into the Division Series if they draw the Yankees. Not a bad problem to have when you’re trying to make noise in your first playoff appearance since 2021.
For a team that’s exceeded expectations all season, having your biggest rival actively hoping to avoid you? That’s probably the best compliment Boston could ask for heading into October.
