Rays Target Giants .324 Average Infielder as Best Trade Deadline Option

The Tampa Bay Rays sit atop the AL East heading into the All-Star break, and they’re clearly positioning themselves as buyers before the August 1 trade deadline.

While starting pitching and bullpen help always make sense, the Rays really need more offense. Specifically from the middle infield.

That’s where Luis Arraez comes in. ESPN’s Jeff Passan pegged the Giants second baseman as Tampa Bay’s “best match” at this year’s deadline, and it’s easy to see why.

“Upgrading the offense, then, is a priority for Tampa Bay, and to do so with someone like Arraez checks just about every box.”

Arraez has been nothing short of elite since signing his $12 million deal with San Francisco. He’s slashing .324/.360/.456 with an 816 OPS and 130 OPS+ – some of the best marks of his career.

The numbers tell the story perfectly. 112 hits, 20 doubles, seven triples, four homers, and 34 RBIs. He’s also swiped seven bases while walking 21 times against just 15 strikeouts.

That 3.9% strikeout rate is what really stands out.

What makes this even more appealing for the Rays is Arraez’s defense. While offense drives his value, he’s been surprisingly solid defensively at second base this season. That two-way contribution is exactly what Tampa Bay needs.

Picture Arraez in the leadoff spot, getting on base ahead of Junior Caminero, Yandy Diaz, and Jonathan Aranda. That’s the kind of table-setting this Rays offense has been missing.

From where I’m sitting, this feels like a natural fit. The Giants seem willing to move pieces, and Arraez represents the perfect blend of contact ability and on-base skills that Tampa Bay covets.

All things considered, if the Rays are serious about making a playoff push, Arraez should be at the top of their wish list. The question isn’t whether he’d help – it’s whether they can put together the right package to get him.
