The Phillies are betting big on a rookie to anchor their outfield in 2026. Justin Crawford, son of former MLB All-Star Carl Crawford, is expected to take over center field duties after the team parted ways with Harrison Bader.

Bleacher Report’s Kerry Miller pegged Crawford as Philadelphia’s biggest X-factor heading into the new season. That’s saying something for a club that also added Adolis Garcia and expects Andrew Painter to step into the rotation.

“Like the Mets with (Carson) Benge, the Phillies are probably going to be handing a starting outfielder job to a prospect who has yet to make his MLB debut,” Miller writes. “… But if he struggles and it’s up to Brandon Marsh, Adolis Garcia, and, I suppose, Otto Kemp… to carry this offense? Insert ‘Michael Scott’s brave face grimace’ gif here.”

It’s a calculated risk that could define Philadelphia’s season. Crawford hasn’t seen big league pitching yet, but the organization feels confident enough to hand him the keys to center field on Opening Day.

The 21-year-old put up impressive numbers in Triple-A last season, hitting .334 with an .863 OPS. He’s not going to launch 30 home runs, but that’s not why the Phillies are excited about him.

Crawford brings elite speed and contact skills that could provide exactly what this lineup needs. His bat-to-ball ability should translate well to the majors, and his defensive instincts in center field give the Phillies confidence they can trust him from day one.

Here’s where it gets interesting for Philadelphia’s championship hopes.

If Crawford hits the ground running, the Phillies suddenly have a dynamic leadoff option who can create havoc on the basepaths while taking pressure off Kyle Schwarber and Bryce Harper. That’s the kind of depth that makes October runs possible.

But if he struggles? The backup plan isn’t pretty. Brandon Marsh would likely slide over to center, but that leaves the Phillies thin in the corners and puts more pressure on Garcia to produce immediately.

The organization didn’t make drastic changes this winter – they also lost Matt Strahm, Nick Castellanos, and Ranger Suarez while adding Brad Keller to the mix. That makes Crawford’s development even more crucial to thier overall success.

All things considered, it’s exactly the kind of move that separates contenders from pretenders. The Phillies believe they have something special in Crawford, and 2026 will show whether that confidence was justified.

The way I see it, Philadelphia’s championship window depends as much on this rookie’s adjustment to big league pitching as it does on Harper staying healthy. That’s a lot of pressure for someone who’s never faced major league pitching, but it’s also the kind of opportunity that creates stars.
