The Philadelphia Phillies made one of the biggest moves at the trade deadline, acquiring Luis Arraez from the San Francisco Giants. His .324 batting average leads all NL hitters, making this a huge offensive upgrade.
But here’s the thing – Arraez plays second base, which creates an interesting puzzle for the Phillies. What happens to Bryson Stott?
According to Matt Gelb of The Athletic, the Phillies are weighing a couple options. The obvious move would be sliding Stott over to third base. That’s not exactly shocking – he’s got some experience there.
The wild card? They’re actually considering moving Stott to the outfield.
“They could also keep Harper and Bohm on the corners and send Stott to the outfield, an option the club has discussed internally,” Gelb reports.
Now, Stott’s been excellent defensively at second base. Moving him to third wouldn’t be ideal, but it’s workable. He’s played 15 total innings at third in the majors and logged 68 innings there during his minor league career. Not much, but at least there’s some familiarity.
The outfield move? That’s where things get interesting.
Unlike Trea Turner, who actually has big league outfield experience, Stott has never once played out there in the majors. Going back through his entire professional career since being drafted in 2019, he’s never logged an inning in the outfield at any level.
They’ve experimented with Edmundo Sosa in the outfield before with decent results. But asking Stott to learn a completely new position mid-season – especially one he’s never played professionally – carries real risk.
The Phillies clearly believe they had to upgrade their offense, and Arraez certainly does that. But now they’re juggling pieces across the infield and potentially the outfield too. Harper and Bohm seem locked into their corner spots, so something’s got to give.
What makes this move particularly bold is the timing. Teaching someone outfield positioning, reads off the bat, and jump angles during a playoff race isn’t exactly ideal. But if Stott’s athleticism translates and he picks it up quickly, the Phillies could end up with their best overall lineup.
It’s a fascinating gamble for a team that’s clearly going all-in this season. The next few weeks should tell us whether this reshuffling works or creates more problems than it solves.
