The Phillies have a center field problem, and Bleacher Report’s Zachary D. Rymer thinks he’s found the solution.
After losing Harrison Bader and cutting Nick Castellanos, Philadelphia’s outfield took a hit. They’ve got Adolis Garcia and Brandon Marsh, but let’s be honest – that’s not exactly a championship-caliber group.
Rymer’s proposal? Go get Byron Buxton from the Minnesota Twins.
The Trade Framework
Here’s what the deal would look like:
Phillies receive: OF Byron Buxton
Twins receive: No. 53 overall prospect OF Justin Crawford, PHI No. 4 prospect RHP Gage Wood, PHI No. 6 prospect 2B Aroon Escobar
It’s a steep price, but there’s logic behind it.
“This is partially about the stubborn weakness the Phillies have had in center field, but more about them properly going all-in to get past the Los Angeles Dodgers to make it back to the World Series,” Rymer wrote. “It’s a tall order that requires one more big swing, and Buxton has more than enough upside to justify such a swing on him.”
What Buxton Brings
The numbers tell the story. Buxton slashed .264/.327/.551 with a .878 OPS this past season, launching 35 home runs and driving in 83 RBI across 126 games. He also swiped 24 bases and posted a 136 OPS+.
That’s elite production when he’s on the field.
But here’s the thing about Buxton – he brings that rare combination of power and defense that changes a team’s entire dynamic. His Platinum Glove in center field would transform the Phillies’ outfield defense overnight.
The contract situation makes it even more appealing. Buxton’s signed through 2028 at just $15.1 million per year. For a Phillies organization that just committed big money to Kyle Schwarber, that’s actually reasonable for this level of talent.
The Durability Question
Of course, there’s always been one concern with Buxton: staying healthy.
“His durability is an ever-present concern, but he’s coming off a career year,” Rymer noted. That’s the calculated risk here – you’re betting on a player who’s had injury issues but just delivered his best offensive season.
The Phillies would be gambling that Buxton’s 2024 performance represents what he can do when healthy, not a one-off career year.
Prospects Going Out
The package heading to Minnesota would hurt. Justin Crawford ranks as the 53rd overall prospect in baseball, while Gage Wood and Aroon Escobar represent the organization’s fourth and sixth-best prospects respectively.
But as Rymer points out, the Phillies would keep their crown jewels in Aidan Miller and Andrew Painter. Sometimes you’ve got to give up good players to get great ones.
The way I see it, this trade comes down to Philadelphia’s championship window. They’re built to win now, and center field remains their most glaring weakness.
Maybe Bryce Harper can work some magic during WBC play and convince his teammate that Philadelphia’s the place to be. Stranger things have happened when stars start recruiting stars.
