The Philadelphia Phillies nearly missed out on their biggest trade deadline acquisition when talks for Luis Arraez hit a wall just hours before the 2026 deadline.
The All-Star second baseman has looked great in his first few games with Philadelphia, but according to USA Today’s Bob Nightengale, the deal almost didn’t happen at all.
Here’s what went down: The Phillies and San Francisco Giants were stuck on a one-for-one swap that would’ve sent prospect Ramon Marquez to San Francisco for Arraez. That’s it.
“The Phillies and Giants’ one-for-one deal of Arraez for prospect Ramon Marquez was dead late Sunday night, only for the San Francisco Giants to re-engage late in the night,” Nightengale writes. “The trade discussions expanded to include Phillies reliever prospect Marty Gair and Giants reliever Caleb Kilian when the two sides finally agreed to a deal, pending physicals.”
Turns out that breakdown was the best thing that could’ve happened to Philadelphia.
When talks resumed, the Giants threw in right-handed reliever Caleb Kilian to sweeten the deal. All Dave Dombrowski had to do was add reliever prospect Marty Gair to make the numbers work.
That’s a win for the Phillies. Getting Kilian – who’s got some real upside in the bullpen – essentially for free while adding Gair to the package? Not bad at all.
The way I see it, that initial one-for-one swap would’ve been tough to swallow for Phillies fans. Trading a breakout pitching prospect like Marquez straight up for a rental, even one as good as Arraez, doesn’t feel great.
But now? Philadelphia gets their proven hitter and a potential bullpen piece without giving up much more than they were already willing to part with.
Look, Dombrowski probably should’ve done more at this deadline – the rotation, bullpen, and outfield all could’ve used help. But the Arraez deal is already paying off, and it’s an even better trade thanks to that late-night drama that almost killed it.
Sometimes the best deals are the ones that almost don’t happen.
