The Washington Nationals are bringing Wilson Ramos back for one final moment.
The beloved catcher will sign a contract with the Nats this weekend to officially retire with the franchise where he spent his best years, according to MASN’s Dan Kolko.
They called him the Buffalo, and there’s a reason Nationals fans still light up when his name comes up.
Ramos came through the Twins system but played just seven games in Minnesota before Washington traded for him. That trade turned into one of the franchise’s better moves.
He spent seven seasons in D.C., putting up 10.6 Wins Above Replacement while becoming the steady presence behind the plate the organization needed. Ramos hit .268 with 83 home runs as a National, but those numbers don’t capture his impact.
His best season came in 2016. Ramos made his first All-Star Game that year and finished with a .307 batting average, 25 doubles, 22 homers and 80 RBI.
That was also his last season with the Nats.
After leaving Washington, Ramos made stops with the Rays, Phillies, Mets, Tigers and Guardians. His last official MLB appearance came with Cleveland in 2021, but he wasn’t ready to walk away just yet.
The 37-year-old has kept playing everywhere from the Atlantic League to the Mexican League. This past winter, he was still suiting up for Margarita in the Venezuelan Winter League.
Now he’s finally hanging up the cleats for good.
Ramos was built like a classic catcher – 6-foot-1, 241 pounds – and he wasn’t winning any footraces. But he did everything else well on a baseball field, and that’s what made him so valuable during those years in Washington.
The Nationals will give him the send-off he deserves this weekend. It’s the right move for a guy who meant so much to the organization during his time there.
