The Red Sox have a first base problem. Triston Casas is done for the season, and Rafael Devers wants nothing to do with moving across the diamond to fill the gap.
Boston’s sitting a game under .500 in third place in the AL East. They’re not out of it, but they’ll need reinforcements at the trade deadline if they want to make a serious run — specifically someone who can play first and add some pop to the lineup.
Joel Reuter of Bleacher Report suggests Nathaniel Lowe as a potential target.
“They could use the opening on the infield as a way to get top prospect Marcelo Mayer into the lineup, but a trade for someone like Rhys Hoskins or Nathaniel Lowe also remains a real possibility,” Reuter writes.
Lowe hasn’t exactly been tearing it up with the Nationals this season. He’s hitting .230/.306/.400 with a .706 OPS — not the numbers you’d expect from a former Silver Slugger. That said, he’s still managed seven homers and 30 RBIs, showing the power potential is there.
The 29-year-old first baseman brings championship experience from his time with the 2023 Rangers and has a Gold Glove on his resume. His track record suggests he could be a significant upgrade for Boston both offensively and defensively.
What makes Lowe particularly interesting is that he’s a proven commodity. The Red Sox current internal options at first base just aren’t cutting it, and Lowe represents a clear upgrade without breaking the bank.
Of course, this all changes if Devers suddenly decides he’s willing to slide over to first. So far, there’s been no indication that’s happening. The way things are going, Chaim Bloom will need to look outside the organization for help, and Lowe might be the most sensible target on the market.
