The Red Sox just spent big on Alex Bregman, signing him to a three-year, $120 million deal with opt-outs after each of the first two seasons. But with Rafael Devers firmly established at third base, Boston’s plans for their new star are taking shape.
Bleacher Report’s Joel Reuter believes Bregman is headed to second base for the duration of his contract, with prospect Kristian Campbell eventually taking over when Bregman’s deal expires.
“The Red Sox signed Bregman to a massive three-year, $120 million deal earlier this month, and the longtime third baseman is expected to shift to second base in his Boston debut,” Reuter wrote. “He had a 118 OPS+ last season while recording his third straight 4-WAR performance, and will now earn $40 million annually for the next three years.”
The position change shouldn’t be an issue. Bregman has already stated he’s willing to play anywhere that helps the team win. It’s a team-first mentality that Boston surely factored into their decision to invest $40 million annually in the former Astro.
What makes this interesting is Boston’s existing depth at second base. With Bregman likely taking over there, Campbell’s path to the majors becomes more complicated. The Red Sox might consider moving Campbell to the outfield to get his bat in the lineup, though that’s just speculation at this point.
Second base seems like the logical landing spot for Bregman given the current roster construction. The way Boston ultimately configures their infield will be worth watching as spring training approaches.
