MLB Spring Breakout Returns: Baseball’s Future Stars Take Center Stage

MLB’s next generation of stars will take center stage this week as Spring Breakout returns for its second year, showcasing the best prospects from all 30 farm systems.

The four-day prospect showcase features 16 exhibition games where baseball’s brightest young talents will go head-to-head. It’s a rare opportunity to see tomorrow’s stars today, with 72 of MLB Pipeline’s Top 100 prospects participating.

The action kicks off Thursday when the Red Sox unveil their elite hitting trio — Roman Anthony, Kristian Campbell, and Marcelo Mayer — against the Rays and their shortstop of the future, Carson Williams.

We’ll also get our first national look at the top picks from the 2024 MLB Draft, including the top three selections: Cleveland’s Travis Bazzana, Cincinnati’s Chase Burns, and Colorado’s Charlie Condon.

Prospects to Watch

Roman Anthony, OF, Red Sox

Anthony is the crown jewel of Boston’s elite trio of hitting prospects. The 20-year-old posted an .894 OPS across two minor league levels last season and actually hit better after his promotion to Triple-A, where he slashed .344/.463/.982. A second-round pick in 2022, Anthony has quickly risen to become a consensus top-five prospect in baseball.

Max Clark, OF, Tigers

Clark, the No. 3 overall pick in the 2023 MLB Draft, enters just his third pro season despite being only 20 years old. The speedy center fielder leads the next wave of Tigers prospects, adding to the growing optimism surrounding Detroit’s rebuild.

Carson Williams, SS, Rays

Williams, 21, represents Tampa Bay’s future at shortstop. The 2021 first-rounder showed an impressive power-speed combination at Double-A Montgomery last season, mashing 20 home runs and stealing 33 bases. That’s exactly the kind of profile the Rays love to develop.

Travis Bazzana, 2B, Guardians

The Guardians selected Bazzana with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 MLB Draft after he hit a ridiculous .407/.568/.911 as a junior at Oregon State. He’s had just one hit this spring, but he made it count by launching a home run. Cleveland’s player development machine now has its hands on one of the most polished college hitters in recent memory.

Noah Schultz, LHP, White Sox

The White Sox desperately need some hope, and Schultz is providing it. The 6-foot-9 lefty dominated in 2023, pitching to a 2.24 ERA with 115 strikeouts in 88.1 minor league innings. The 2022 first-rounder has quickly become Chicago’s top prospect and represents a potential cornerstone for their rebuild.

Jac Caglianone, 1B, Royals

A two-way phenom at Florida, Caglianone is turning heads with his bat in his first big league camp. The Royals’ top prospect has already launched three home runs this spring, including a majestic 444-foot shot last weekend. His raw power could make him a perfect complement to Kansas City’s emerging young core.
