The Yankees face a tricky decision with Cody Bellinger this offseason. While keeping him seems like the logical move, there’s a compelling case for letting him walk.

Jasson Dominguez needs regular at-bats to develop, and the organization wants to see what Spencer Jones can do at the major league level. That doesn’t leave much room for Bellinger in the outfield mix.

It’s a tough call. Bellinger was one of the Yankees’ most productive hitters last season, while Dominguez and Jones remain question marks. But player development often requires these kinds of calculated risks.

Enter the Mets

If Bellinger hits free agency, the New York Mets make perfect sense as a landing spot. They’ve made a habit of poaching former Yankees talent in recent years, and Mark Feinsand of MLB.com thinks it could happen again.

The Mets have the financial flexibility to make it work. With Pete Alonso’s future uncertain and outfield spots potentially opening up with Starling Marte and Cedric Mullins hitting free agency, Bellinger fills multiple needs.

“The Mets clearly have the financial wherewithal to sign Bellinger, and with the lineup potentially facing the loss of Pete Alonso, adding a big bat will be in their plans this winter. Starling Marte and Cedric Mullins are free agents, leaving an opening in the outfield, though Alonso’s departure would also leave the Mets in need of a first baseman.”

Bellinger’s versatility makes him attractive. He can handle first base if Alonso leaves or slide into the outfield if they retain their slugger.

From the Mets’ perspective, it’s a no-brainer. You get a proven bat and steal talent from your crosstown rivals.

For the Yankees? Watching an above-average player join the Mets would sting, especially after seeing how these Subway Series defections have played out recently.

The Yankees have to weigh immediate production against long-term development. It’s the kind of decision that could define their next few seasons, one way or the other.
