The Athletics missed the postseason for the fifth straight year, but there’s reason for optimism heading into the offseason. They posted their best record since 2021, and their young core is starting to make noise.

Brent Rooker, Jacob Wilson, and Nick Kurtz all had strong campaigns. Kurtz could be looking at AL Rookie of the Year hardware.

The foundation’s there. Now it’s about adding the right pieces without overspending.

Don’t expect Oakland to make headlines with blockbuster signings. But they could be smart about targeting players who’ll provide value while staying within budget constraints.

The good news? They’re not hemorrhaging talent this winter. Sean Newcomb, Jose Leclerc, and Scott McGough are the main names hitting free agency.

Former MLB GM Jim Bowden believes the A’s will focus on upgrading their infield, particularly at second and third base. He’s also eyeing their rotation as an area that needs attention.

“The Athletics are focused on improving at second and third base, looking at both external and internal options. In my opinion, they also need to improve their pitching staff, as they ranked 27th in team ERA last year.”

That ERA ranking tells the story. You can’t compete consistently when you’re giving up runs at that clip.

For infield help, names like Isiah Kiner-Falefa or Yoan Moncada make sense. Both offer versatility and won’t command premium contracts.

On the pitching side, Tyler Anderson stands out as a realistic target. He’s a free agent who wouldn’t break the bank while providing reliable innings behind Luis Severino.

The Athletics aren’t looking to make splash signings. They’re building methodically, and that approach could pay dividends if they identify the right under-the-radar additions.
