The Mets’ first base plans just got more complicated. With Vladimir Guerrero Jr. signing a massive 14-year, $500 million extension with the Blue Jays, New York must pivot to other options — including potentially keeping their own slugger.

Pete Alonso is currently playing on a two-year, $54 million deal that includes an opt-out after this season. The Mets likely structured the contract this way anticipating Alonso would exercise the opt-out, freeing them to pursue Guerrero in free agency. That backup plan is now off the table.

FanSided’s Brian Germinaro suggests the Mets should now focus on extending Alonso with a four-year, $132 million deal.

“Because of this hot start, many fans have talked about locking up Alonso for a long-term deal to keep him in Queens for life,” Germinaro wrote. “With Guerrero Jr. off the market, the next best option for the Mets would be to lock up Alonso. Throughout his seven-year career, he’s slashed .249/.340/.516 with 229 home runs, 597 RBIs, a 134 OPS+, and a wRC+ of 132. A four-year deal with an annual value just below Guerrero Jr. is perfect for both the Mets and Alonso.”

Alonso’s making a compelling case for that extension. He’s off to a blistering start in 2024, slashing .333/.447/.692 with three homers and 15 RBIs. His plate discipline has improved too — he’s drawing more walks while cutting down on strikeouts. It’s reminiscent of his rookie season when he combined average and power to become an immediate star.

The proposed $132 million extension would place Alonso sixth among first basemen in total contract value. He’d slot in behind Guerrero, Bryce Harper, Kris Bryant, Matt Olson and Freddie Freeman, according to Spotrac.

What’s next for the Mets?

Keeping Alonso has ripple effects throughout the organization. It would allow the Mets to keep Mark Vientos at third base rather than potentially shifting him to first. That’s significant because a core of Alonso, Francisco Lindor, Juan Soto and Vientos could give the Mets championship-level talent for years to come.

The Mets have been preparing for multiple scenarios, but Guerrero’s extension forces their hand. They’ll need to decide soon whether Alonso remains their long-term answer at first base or if they’ll explore other options on the market.
