Mets trade pitch lands All-Star Game MVP after Mark Vientos news image

The New York Mets face a potential roster challenge with Mark Vientos sidelined by a hamstring injury. If this turns into a long-term absence, the front office might need to explore external options to maintain their offensive production.

Losing Vientos’ bat would hurt. The Mets sit atop the National League East, but the Philadelphia Phillies are breathing down their necks just a half game back.

One intriguing possibility comes from Jake Elman of Athlon Sports, who suggests the Mets could target Boston Red Sox outfielder Jarren Duran. It’s not a perfect positional match – Duran’s an outfielder while Vientos mans third base – but his bat could provide the lineup boost they need.

“No, Duran can’t replace Vientos’ presence at third. Duran, a 2024 All-Star, is a natural outfielder in his first season manning left field on an everyday basis.

“However, Duran is a dangerous bat who fits the Mets’ center field hole. The speedy lefty enters Wednesday hitting .273 with 17 doubles, six triples, and a .743 OPS for a fourth-place Red Sox club.”

Duran’s been an interesting case this season. After his breakout 2024 All-Star campaign, expectations were high heading into 2025. But he’s managed just four home runs so far while posting a .273 average and 107 OPS+.

Those numbers represent a step back from his recent production. Duran posted a 131 OPS+ in 2024 and 121 OPS+ in 2023. But the Red Sox have struggled as a team, sitting in fourth place, which could be affecting individual performances across the board.

The way I see it, Duran’s talent is still there. Sometimes a change of scenery – especially to a contending team like the Mets – can unlock a player’s potential again. His speed and ability to get on base would fit well in New York’s lineup construction.

Whether Boston would be willing to move an All-Star outfielder depends on how they view their own chances and what the Mets might offer in return. But if Vientos’ injury lingers, don’t be surprised if the Mets start making calls.
