The New York Mets expect Pete Alonso to sign elsewhere in free agency and have moved to alternate plans, SNY’s Andy Martino reports.
“The Mets have pivoted to plan B, post-Alonso,” Martino said. “They now consider it the most likely outcome that Alonso will sign elsewhere. They add (Jesse Winker) and will add a reliever, possibly a top one.”
Alonso, 29, has been the Mets’ primary first baseman since 2019. He’s hit 192 home runs with a .251 batting average in 683 games.
The team is exploring replacement options, including a potential trade for Vladimir Guerrero Jr. of the Toronto Blue Jays.
ESPN’s Buster Olney reports the Mets have significant interest in Guerrero Jr.
“In the Mets’ perfect world, they’d love to find a deal for Vladimir Guerrero Jr., who, like Juan Soto, is a slugger who makes contact,” Olney said. “199 hits and 96 strikeouts last year. If they pulled off a trade for him, they could sign him before he hit the market, as they did with (Francisco Lindor).”
Guerrero Jr., 24, enters his final year of team control with Toronto. The Blue Jays and Guerrero Jr. have discussed a contract extension, though no agreement has been reached.
The four-time All-Star hit .264 with 26 home runs and 94 RBI in 2023.
