Mark Vientos is switching to Scott Boras as his new agent ahead of arbitration eligibility next winter, Will Sammon of The Athletic reported Monday.

The move comes after a tough 2025 season where the 26-year-old third baseman couldn’t build on his breakout 2024 campaign. Vientos lost his starting job to Brett Baty and spent most of last season platooning at DH.

It’s a significant development for someone who looked like the Mets’ third baseman of the future just two years ago.

From Breakout to Backup

Vientos had everything going his way in 2024. He started that season in Triple-A but wound up playing 111 games for the Mets, hitting .266/.322/.516 with 27 home runs and 71 RBI. His .802 OPS was a career best.

The postseason was even better. Vientos slashed .327/.362/.636 with five homers and 14 RBI – that RBI total set a new Mets franchise record for the playoffs.

But 2025 told a different story. Despite appearing in a career-high 121 games, Vientos managed just a .233 average with 17 homers and a .702 OPS. The power was still there, but the consistency wasn’t.

That’s where Baty comes in. The former first-round pick put together his own breakout season and basically took over the starting third base job. Vientos became the forgotten man, shifting to DH duties and watching from the sidelines.

What’s Next for Vientos

Hiring Boras isn’t exactly a subtle move. The super-agent doesn’t typically take on clients looking for modest deals. With arbitration looming after the 2026 season, Vientos and his new representation are probably thinking bigger picture.

The timing is interesting too. The Mets just watched Pete Alonso – another Boras client – sign a five-year, $155 million deal with Baltimore last week. That had to sting, considering Alonso was their homegrown first baseman.

Vientos has some versatility going for him. He’s played first base at the major league level, which gives him options if the third base situation doesn’t clear up. But the Mets seem pretty committed to Baty right now.

The way I see it, this agent switch signals Vientos isn’t content being a platoon player. He’s got undeniable power – those 27 homers in 2024 weren’t a fluke. The question is whether he can find the consistency that made him look like a franchise cornerstone.

With Boras in his corner, don’t be surprised if Vientos starts looking for opportunities elsewhere if the Mets can’t guarantee him a larger role. The arbitration clock is ticking, and players usually want to cash in when they hit that milestone.
