The New York Mets sit at 23-33 and have gone 3-7 over their last 10 games, making them the most disappointing team in baseball by a wide margin.
It’s been tough to watch everything unfold this season, but that’s just where things stand right now. The Mets have struggled on both sides of the ball, and it’s led to questions about who might be available at the deadline.
Obviously, some guys aren’t getting dealt – that seems to include Francisco Lindor and Juan Soto. Lindor hasn’t played the type of baseball Mets fans were hoping for over the past year, while Soto’s been exactly as advertised.
Moving either player would be a surprise, but it sounds like some believe there’s a possibility Lindor could be had for the right price. As shocking as that might be, it might not be as crazy as it initially seems.
“Even if the Mets wanted to sell, what would that look like? Soto isn’t going anywhere,” Tim Kelly of Bleacher Report wrote.
“Francisco Lindor, we think, would also be off limits. Would someone want to trade for Bo Bichette, knowing he can opt out this offseason if he has a strong finish?”
Moving on from Lindor would be a decision that probably isn’t loved by all fans, but most would at least understand it. With his contract situation in play though, it’s tough to find a scenario where the Mets can find the perfect deal to make.
The way I see it, Lindor’s massive deal makes any potential trade complicated. Teams would have to be willing to take on significant money, and the return might not match what the Mets originally hoped when they signed him.
That’s where the season’s disappointment really stings – it’s forced the organization to consider moves that seemed unthinkable just a few months ago.
