Let’s be honest – this Mets team isn’t going anywhere in 2025. If another club is willing to pay up for a controllable asset like Alvarez, it’s worth listening. The 24-year-old is locked up through 2029, which means he’d bring back a substantial return.
That’s where the Yankees come in.

The Yankees need catching help, and their options are getting limited. The Colorado Rockies aren’t likely to move Hunter Goodman, and the Minnesota Twins are probably keeping Ryan Jeffers since they’re still in playoff contention.
Alvarez checks all the boxes for what the Yankees need. He’s young, he’s got term remaining, and he’s already proven he can handle big-league pitching. This season, he’s hitting .259 with a .773 OPS and 114 OPS+ – that’s a significant upgrade over what the Yankees have been getting behind the plate.
From the Mets’ perspective, they could land a legitimate prospect haul from their crosstown rivals. The Yankees have been aggressive in trades before, and they’ve got the farm system depth to make a compelling offer.

Now, let’s pump the brakes a bit. Trading Alvarez isn’t exactly likely. He’s a young, productive player who’s been solid during his MLB career so far. The Mets would need to be blown away by an offer.
