The Mets keep reshaping their roster after landing Juan Soto, but there’s still work to be done in Queens. While they’ve bolstered their pitching staff, the lineup needs attention – especially with Pete Alonso‘s likely departure looming.
Center field stands out as an obvious upgrade target. Jose Siri is holding down the position for now, but the Mets could aim higher. That’s where Luis Robert Jr. comes in.
Bleacher Report’s Zachary D. Rymer sees Robert as an intriguing fit for New York. Here’s what he wrote:
“The Mets still need a reliever after signing A.J. Minter and would also do well to get a better center fielder than Jose Siri. To the latter end, they remain an on-paper fit for Luis Robert Jr.”
Robert’s coming off a down year – there’s no way around it. He hit just .224 with 14 homers and a .657 OPS in 2024. But let’s put that in perspective: just a season earlier, he was one of baseball’s most dynamic outfielders, crushing 38 home runs with a .264/.315/.542 slash line and an .857 OPS.
The tools that made Robert a Silver Slugger and Gold Glove winner haven’t disappeared. At 26, he’s still squarely in his prime. Injuries derailed his 2024 campaign, but a fresh start with a contender could be exactly what he needs to bounce back.
For the Mets, Robert could solve multiple problems. He’d upgrade their outfield defense immediately, and if he returns to form, he’d help offset the power they’d lose without Alonso. The White Sox are rebuilding, so the timing could work for both sides.
The way this offseason’s going, don’t be surprised if the Mets make another big splash. Robert might just be thier next target.
