Mets Players Want Sandy Alcántara, But Marlins Aren’t Ready to Deal
The Marlins aren’t looking to trade Sandy Alcántara despite interest from the Mets and other teams, according to Jon Heyman of the New York Post.
“This Marlins regime consistently tells interested teams legit ace Sandy Alcántara is not available,” Heyman wrote. “But considering the rest of their roster, rival execs remain hopeful their minds change.”
The Mets could use pitching help as the trade deadline approaches, especially with Frankie Montas sidelined and Sean Manaea suffering a setback that will keep him shut down for another two weeks. Several key Mets players have publicly campaigned for the front office to pursue the 2022 NL Cy Young winner.
“It would be one of the best trades that we could have,” Juan Soto told Mike Puma of the New York Post. “I know we have great pitching here, but adding a Cy Young winner like that would be huge.”
Francisco Lindor echoed those sentiments: “It would almost be like adding Soto. You add Soto, it’s going to help the team. You add Alcantara and it’s going to help the team.”
Alcántara missed the entire 2024 season, and the Marlins might be waiting for him to rebuild his trade value before considering any deals. After his dominant Cy Young campaign in 2022, when he led the league in innings pitched and complete games, he struggled through a subpar 2023 season.
The Marlins have been sellers at recent trade deadlines, moving Luis Arráez and Tanner Scott last season. But they’re apparently drawing the line at their ace, at least for now.
If healthy and back to form, Alcántara could potentially step in as the Mets’ ace and bolster their rotation for a playoff push. He’s proven himself as a true workhorse when healthy, exactly the type of pitcher teams covet for October baseball.
For now, though, he remains just a wishful target for the Mets until the Marlins change their stance.
