The Seattle Mariners are facing potential clubhouse issues stemming from what’s being called “Handshake-Gate” during the World Baseball Classic. Cal Raleigh refused to shake hands with teammate Randy Arozarena and Josh Naylor, creating tension that could impact the team’s chemistry moving forward.
While Raleigh played it off as staying focused on representing Team USA, the situation with Arozarena seemed different. Despite Raleigh saying it was “all love,” sources suggest signals are getting crossed behind the scenes.
If Seattle wants to avoid clubhouse problems in 2026, they might need to move Arozarena. FanSided’s Mark Powell agrees and proposes a trade with the Detroit Tigers as a potential solution.
The Proposed Trade
Detroit gets: OF Randy Arozarena
Seattle gets:
• Detroit No. 6 prospect INF Hao-Yu Lee
• Detroit No. 9 prospect SS Jordan Yost
• Detroit No. 27 prospect OF Nick Dumesnil
“From a value perspective, this could be as good as it gets for the Mariners. If they do choose to trade Arozarena this season, whether it be now or the deadline, they’re unlikely to get two top-10 prospects from a solid farm system like Detroit’s.”
Powell acknowledges the situation might be overblown. Just because Raleigh’s representing Team USA doesn’t mean he has to act like Arozarena doesn’t exist, especially if they’re friends outside the tournament context.
What Seattle Would Be Trading Away
This past season, Arozarena slashed .238/.334/.426/.760 with 32 doubles, 27 home runs, 76 RBI, and 32 stolen bases in 160 games. He’s a core part of their offense.
But those Detroit prospects could help Seattle’s long-term competitiveness. Getting two top-10 prospects from a solid farm system like Detroit’s doesn’t happen often.
Hopefully this is just fans and critics reading too much into nothing. But if there really are clubhouse issues brewing, this is exactly the type of deal Seattle needs ready to go. Sometimes chemistry problems don’t fix themselves, and the Mariners can’t afford to let team dynamics derail their competitive window.
